The Carpathian Mountains
The Carpathian Mountains are a mountain range in Europe and the tallest in the continent. They are often referred to as the “roof of Europe”.
The mountains were given their name by Ptolemy, a Greco-Roman astronomer who lived between 100 and 168 AD. He referred to them as “Carpathian” because he thought they were shaped like the Greek peninsula of Karpathos. The name was later adopted by other European languages, including English and German, which both use it for the mountains.

The Dolomites
The Dolomites are an Alpine mountain range in northeastern Italy. The range lies entirely in Italy, stretching 180 km from the River Adige in Trentino; to where it meets with the Gulf of Venice, on Venetian territory. Its northern border is formed by the Piave Valley, which includes some other minor parts of Veneto; and its southern border is formed by the Adriatic sea which separates it from other Alpine ranges. The Dolomites are nearly equally shared between the provinces of Trentino and Veneto.
